Sam Westin is rarely afraid in the wilderness, but maybe she should be now. Her friends Kyla and Kim were murdered on a popular hiking trail only a few weeks ago and the murderer is still unidentified. When Sam steps in as a substitute for Kim to shepherd six troubled teens through the backcountry, she can't help watching over her shoulder. Has grief at the violent deaths of her friends made her paranoid, or is she right to suspect her unruly band is sharing the mountain wilderness with the killer?

I'm a big fan of the Sam Westin series ( . . . . this novel is the 4th in the series). Beason writes well. Throughout the series, her descriptions make me feel like I'm there. Backcountry takes place in the Pacific NW. I could almost smell the pine and feel the soft ground under my feet as the crew hiked through the forest. I can tell that Beason has actually experienced the terrain. The character Sam Westin is fun. Especially during the action sequences. She has grit, smarts, and an entertaining sense of humor. In fact, some of the book's most humorous moments are also the most intense. I care a lot about what happens to Sam, and this makes the novel a page-turner for me. Beason writes action in a way that I really understand what's happening. I can see the action unfold before me . . . I don't get lost in her words (which seems like a common problem with most action authors.) Side note: I like the fact that it's fairly "clean" to read. . . . very little crude language and only when it furthers the story. Highly recommend the Sam Westin series and all Beason novels.Product details

Backcountry The Sam Westin Mysteries Volume 4 Pamela Beason 9780997642049 Books Reviews
I loved this book. What an awesome addition to an already great series. I love that Sam has so many different talents. This book really put a new spin on her character. While it still kept to the wildlife scenario, it really took her out of her comfort zone and she still handled it remarkably well. Pamela Beason is an amazing author and this book also kept me guessing to the very end who the killer actually was. I also have to say that there were several sections is this story had me grabbing for the kleenex box. I just hope another installment isn't far behind.
These adventures/mysteries are such fun to read. Love the characters and the passages describing the scenery allow the reader to be there in the mountains, Galapagos or wherever Sam is traveling. I stumbled across this series on my kindle and look forward to the next Sam Westin novel. If you love nature, quirky characters, and good writing. Please, join Sam. I promise you will enjoy the read and learn about nature.
If you like nature, preservation, mysteries this series is for you. Backcountry uses the Northern Cascade NP as the backdrop into this murder.
After book one I was hooked. This one dealing with wayward teens turning their lives around via living in the outdoors and learning to trust each other hit home.
Sam Westin is loose again in the outdoors, filling in for friends tragically murdered, this time guiding troubled city-slicker teens in the North Cascades. Multiple mysteries for this intrepid outdoorswoman/semi-pro sleuth to solve.
Clues & foreshadowing abound, but few will figure out "who" and "why" until the end, the mark of a great mystery author.
A great, fluid read, well-paced, and you can almost smell the mountain air. Highly recommended.
This fast-paced thriller puts Sam Westin in charge of a group of troubled teenagers on a wilderness trek. It's not just teenage angst and hormones that have Sam worried. She is still processing the murder of two of her dearest friends while they were hiking not all that far from where she is riding herd on the troubled teens. The sense of menace from the most dangerous animal in the forest, man, is palpable. Plenty of twists and surprises. Reviewed by the author of Chasing Nathan Chasing Nathan
Wow, I just finished BACKCOUNTRY. This was my first book in the Sam Westin series, and now I want to read them all. Sam Westin is one spunky character. She’s a free-lance writer, outdoor enthusiast and middle-aged tomboy, who lives on the skinny branches financially. Reeling from the murder of two women friends, a mother and daughter, and looking for work again, she reluctantly takes a three-week gig as a wilderness leader for a group of troubled teens—a position usually held by one of her murdered friends. We learn the story of each teen as the three weeks go by. We overhear her cell phone visits with heartthrob FBI agent boyfriend, Chase, who lives in another state and wants her closer. There are snapping twigs in the night, a bear, a mountain lion, escaped teens, and a crazy mountain man who tries to kill Sam. And then things get worse. As Sam begins to figure out who may have killed her friends, the killer stages an accident that nearly succeeds in doing her in, followed by a high-speed chase on the freeway. Oh the suspense. I didn’t want the book to end, but couldn’t put it down. The teen characters were especially well drawn, so much so that I wonder how they are doing now. If you enjoy a good mystery and you love the outdoors, I highly recommend this book.
This is another strong and most enjoyable effort from Pamela Beason. I have read and appreciated the previous "Sam Westin" books and found this one just as admirable as the previous efforts. Although the setting here is similar--here the Cascades fairly near where Sam lives--this time the endangered species is human.
Before the book opens a mother and daughter, both close friends of Sam's, have been shot and killed in the Back Country, and police have no clue as to the identity of the killer. Both also worked for the same company, an organization devoted to taking troubled teens on wilderness trips to give them a new experience, time to think, and a chance to bond in unfamiliar surroundings. The father of one victim, husband of the other, who also works for this company, asks Sam to take his daughter's place and lead the next group of teens on their exploration. Feeling inadequate to deal with these teens and most reluctant to step into the shoes of her deceased friend, Sam finally agrees, and the group (and book) are off.
The book is a "Who dunnit," but for me the most interesting aspect of the book lay in watching the teens act and interact and in seeing Sam's interaction with them all. No matter how they started, by the end of the book I liked them all and was impressed with Sam's leadership.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would recommend it strongly. My only disappointment is that it seems to be the final Sam Westin novel.
