In Apalachicola, FL, what goes in the river doesn't always stay there.

When some locals find a dead woman in the jaws of a gator, it's fairly upsetting. When Lt. Maggie Redmond finds lifelong friend Axel Blackwell in the dead woman's hotel room, it's a little more upsetting than that.

Axel becomes the chief suspect in his ex-wife's murder, but Maggie is convinced that he would never harm the beautiful but tragic Marisol Corzo.

As Axel deals with his loss, and the potential loss of his freedom, Maggie works to unravel the evidence, evidence that suggests Marisol brought about her own demise. Drug dealers from down south seek to expand their commerce to the sleepy, coastal town of Apalachicola, FL, and it seems that the dead woman is the one who led them there.

As Maggie tries to understand who Marisol really was, she also comes to terms with who she really is, and with her true connection to town crime lord Bennett Boudreaux.

Told with the dry humor, rich coastal atmosphere, and character-driven suspense for which the series is known, Apparent Wind is the 7th book in the Forgotten Coast Florida Suspense series. Although the series is best enjoyed read in order, Apparent Wind can be read as a standalone novel.

What readers are saying about the Forgotten Coast Florida Suspense Series

Not only does McKenna not disappoint, she exceeds already high expectations with this exciting, well-written sequel. The characters are multi-layered, their actions believable. And as McKenna showed in Low Tide, she can wallop you when you least expect it.

If only Dawn McKenna could write as fast as we can read.

Very few people write southerners well. This author is right there among the very best.

The forgotten Coast series has gotten like a great TV series you can't wait for the next one to come out so you can see where its leading.

Not just absorbing and full of surprises, but impossible to predict. McKenna has an amazingly fertile imagination.

I discovered this series quite by accident. I love her in-depth characterizations, vivid imagery, and witty dialogue, all reminiscent of James Lee Burke. It's rare to find this quality of writing on Unlimited.

The Forgotten Coast series has lyrical writing that is descriptive without going overboard (no pun intended) and a truly thrilling story line with well developed characters.

There are only a handful of writers, whose books I will buy the instant they're released. Dawn Lee McKenna is on the short list. She creates characters, even the minor ones, who seem totally real and believable. The situations are anything but predictable and she makes you feel as if you're right there during the investigation.

Apparent Wind The Forgotten Coast Florida Suspense Series Book 7 edition by Dawn Lee McKenna Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

This is an excellent series. Each book can and does stand alone. Each character was slowly and thoroughly developed. There is room for more books.
There should be more books in the series. Do Maggie and Wyatt actually get married. Wyatt has to become sheriff again or maybe there needs to be a female sheriff. The sheriff who took over for Wyatt feels like he might go bad! To many questions but excellent read. Oh and Stoopid, what a funny addition. This series had it all suspense, mystery, love, humor and compassion. Already suggested this series to others.
I got one of the Forgotten Coast books for free from Book Bub and I liked it so much that I bought the other 6. I finished all 7 of these books in one weeks' time (had a VERY slow week at work). Dawn McKenna created a wonderful world for all of these books to take place in. She has created some fantastic characters (Maggie, Wyatt, Boudreaux to name three). She interweaves their lives and it all makes perfect sense. Each book seems to add another layer to the whole underlying arcs. Maggie is the main character in all the books, but we get equal time with Wyatt and Boudreaux, her children, her parents, her ex-husband. Everything blends perfectly and the real story unfolds a little at a time, like a nicely wrapped surprise.

I would recommend all of the Forgotten Coast books - they stand alone, but when read in order they keep you reaching for the next book.
It was like reading a script from a soap opera. "Once she'd washed the eggs and put them in her Grandmother's big stoneware bowl, she fixed herself another cup of coffee and sat down at the rustic dining room table her father had built with his father." Then there is this which appears for no reason out of nowhere and is evidently a flashback to a prior novel "Of course I felt some kind of obligation Maggie" Boudreaux snapped. "How could I not, my own nephew raped you! Do you have any idea what that did to my mind?" I won't go on, but the book did. The murder mystery was not much of a mystery; sort of a filler for all the drama between family members. It almost would qualify as a romance novel in a weird sort of way. I speed read through the last half; I don't know why. Just not for me.
I have loved this series up to this book. I notice a number of the reviewers commented more on the excellent series than on this book. Where Apparent Wind works, it works well, but on the whole it does not work.

This one has no clear resolution, the character development and would-be cozineess is hurried and superficial, with only one or two scenes satisfying.

What happens with Maggie's kids while she is withdrawn from main characters and struggles with her relationships with key people is not even addressed. What is going on between the kids and Maggie's parents? Not covered.

The book is a shift from the former state of affairs and not successful as such; new characters and increased involvement with older, peripheral ones, are rushed and brittle.

The romance progresse, but not well and the mystery is not clearly resolved. A lot was introduced but left hanging. I don't even know who did it or why. At the end I thought I had accidently skipped a large section of the book but I had not.

If you like this series for the good writing, solid mysteries and good character development, give Apparent Wind a miss.
There just aren't enough good adjectives to use when reviewing Dawn Lee McKenna's books. "Apparent Wind" was an easy yet tremendously enjoyable read. She writes her characters so well you can picture them in your mind and anticipate seeing them the next time your in Apalach. You can practically smell the brine in the air, taste the coffee, and then long for a dozen fresh oysters. My work demands lots of reading, lots of travel, and lots of speaking...but my life demands scattered hours with a McKenna novel just to sit back and smile. It is six hours to any beach from my house, but only moments away when I read her work.
I absolutely loved the first 6 books of the Forgotten Coast series - Dawn became my new favorite author. But this one was not up to the same level as the others - in fact, I was stunned to look at my to see there were only 10 minutes left in the book and I had no idea it was even close to the end. I wish she would re-write this one to make it a much more satisfying closure for the series. - Or, hopefully, it's not really the end and there are more books to come. She is a fabulous author - there are just many loose ends to the emotions of this one.
I've enjoyed this series since the beginning, but this book the least of all as far as the main plot line goes. Certainly the beginning is a real grabber, with a alligator turning up with the body of a woman clamped in his jaws, but somehow the rest doesn't live up to that.

Maggie and her personal and familial relationships are fascinating and they are the stars of the book, but the actual murder mystery is just pedestrian. There are not too many actual suspects and, at the end, when the actual murderer is arrested, it's extremely abrupt. No hint at all is given about what his real motive was for the murder.

After the arrest I was waiting for a wrap-up to explain the killer's motivation but once the arrest took place he was never even mentioned again! The only wrap-up that took place was in Maggie's personal life.

I've enjoyed this series and really wanted to like this book so I'm a bit sad that I like it less well than I had hoped.
